IB Extended Essays
I've come to realize that a lot of people going to Governor's School are IB students (presumably Diploma Candidates). I'm pretty sure everyone who is an IB student has been told to work on their Extended Essay over the summer, so I was thinking, since we'll have access to CNU's library at Governor's School we should try to take advantage of that and get at least something done for our Extended Essays. Maybe we could organize a few days to work on them together (like research and stuff, not write each others papers) so that we don't get too far behind in writing them?
Even if not, what are everyone's topics?
My preliminary research question is:
To what extent was Earl Warren's decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case his way of repenting for being a key proponent, as the Governor of California, of the internment of Japanese-Americans?

Re: IB Extended Essays
My question: In what way are cult leaders such as Charles Manson and David Koresh psychologically different from those deemed "normal" by society?
Also, my IB coordinator is setting the due date to AUGUST 20TH. I need to get this done before governors school!!

I like your topic Francis, it's very interesting. I'm guessing your subject area is psychology?
And that sucks that your IB Coordinator is making it due on the 20th. I think my rough draft is due to my advisor, TOK teacher, and IB Coordinator, on the first day of school.

Nice, an English Extended Essay.
I contemplated doing English, comparing the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, but my love for history is much greater than my love of Fitzgerald.
I think most people at my school are doing History ones.

Re: IB Extended Essays
That's weird.
I think you're the only person I know in VA that has the option to take HOE.
I would have taken both given the opportunity.
Seriously, if I didn't have to meet stupid diploma requirements, I'd only take History/Social Studies classes.

Re: IB Extended Essays
I was a middle years (6-8th) IB kid, but now I'm at an academic Gov school. Bwahaha. I'm an outsider.
But Larry--we have loose enough diploma requirements that once you finished Trig, you can drop math. After Physics, you can drop science. After 4 years of a main language and 2 years of a second, you can drop languages. (Ah, so sad, you can't drop english. I guess they like to have graduates be literate...)
So I have history buff friend who replaced math with International Relations, science with a Korea/Vietnam seminar, and his languages with Eastern/Western Religions Dual Enrolment and AP Comparative Government. Yay for completing requirements as an underclassman!
Not me....though I am taking two histories: E/W Religions which should be BUTT KICKING AWESOME and a Constitutional academic team class.
Okay, carry on with international bachelorette-y things now...

I know. Gov School have special recs too...I think they upped history to 5 credits for grad, and we have to have 6 language credits (4/2) I'm sure both of us already have the requirements for a VA diploma already.
How many classes do yall take a year?

Re: IB Extended Essays
I take 7.
But w/IB, you have to have a class in every subject area.
Which leaves me, one elective a year.

Re: IB Extended Essays
Yeah, when I was applying to high schools I was disappointed that IB kids could only take 1 semester of Studio Art as underclassmen.
I take 8 classes. Last year I got gym out of the way over the summer, so I had my cores (english, math, science, history) with my two languages (spanish and chinese) another history (AP US) and my art! But we don't have to do gym as upperclassmen....happy day! I doubled on science this year. I like flexible scheduling.
Oh! but we have arena scheduling where you have to wait in line to get slips for your classes. It's really stressful. Everyone wants the popular classes. Sometimes you get 3 fourth periods and no second or first periods. Every year upperclassmen come and watch the freshmen in the hope of videotaping them crying. I have never shed a tear in that arena!
Ahaha, sorry; I'm taking over your IB thread.

Re: IB Extended Essays
I hate to be the spoiler in this enthusiastic chat, but I am a realist and need to warn you that you are NOT going to have copious time to work on projects that are not directly related to Gov School. As the Associate Director in charge of our curriculum, I like to think you will not want to because you will be so engaged with what is happening at CNU in July. Just a friendly warning.

Re: IB Extended Essays
Boy, isn't that the truth! I know that even applies to those of us who work for the Governor's School. I bring along a few things to study each summer, and I never get around to reading what I want. I've finally resorted to telling my professors back home just to consider me "out of commission" for the month of July.ldbucco wrote:... As for Governor's School students: I know I always had a few folks on my hall each year that brought along work from their school back home, and most either didn't do the work or did it in a much lower quality than they would have liked. After all, the Governor's School classes do have homework ("dormwork?"), not to mention all the other required events which fill up the evenings. Plus, there's the need to eat, sleep, socialize, and have leisure time (and as a professional who studies leisure... yes, you do need leisure time).
Thanks for chipping in with the reality check, Lori.

I knew Lori would eventually show up in this thread.
I do think it is still interesting to hear what folks are thinking about for these essays. Might even get some useful feedback.
